چکیده

The vegetation composition of a post-fke succession in Aleppo pine forests of Anica, Greece, was studied by a synchronic method. The sites form a post-fire chronosequence and have typical Mediterranean climate. Data on the flora of the burned sites, growth and life forms of the various plant taxa, as weU as on vegetation smcture are provided. The burned ecosystems recovered quite rapidly. During the first four years of the post-fm succession, herbaceous taxa dominate the flora of the forests, peaking at the second year. After 15 years little change in the vegetation wasobsemed. Therichest family in temsof the numberoftam was IheLeguminosae, especially in the two f i s t years of succession. Most of these taxa were herbaceous. The relative contribution of legumes to the flora after two years is gradually restricted.

Fire Ecology of Ground Vegetation in Pinus roxburghii Sargent Plantations in North-West Himalaya - Floristic Composition and Species Diversity

Effect of fire on phyto-sociology of understorey vegetation in chir pine forests of three different silvological characteristics was compared with pure grassland. 15 grasses, 1 sedge, 5 legumes and 21 non-legumes were recorded in the four study sites. Floristic composition gradually increased from June to August and then declined slowly by October in all the plots. Maximum number of species wa...

Soil microbiological properties and enzymatic activities of long-term post-fire recovery in dry and semiarid Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis M.) forest stands

Wildfires affecting forest ecosystems and post-fire silvicultural treatments may cause considerable changes in soil properties. The capacity of different microbial groups to recolonise soil after disturbances is crucial for proper soil functioning. The aim of this work was to investigate some microbial soil properties and enzyme activities in semiarid and dry Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis M.) f...

Successional trends in standing dead biomass in Mediterranean Basin species

Question: Landscape models of fire occurrence in ecosystems assume that the time since the last fire determines vegetation flammability by enabling the accumulation of dead biomass. In this study we ask if Mediterranean Basin shrublands respond to these models or, on the contrary, if initial successional stages in these ecosystems could be more flammable than later stages. Location: Mediterrane...

Changing fire regimes and old-growth forest succession along a topographic gradient in the Great Smoky Mountains

Patterns of past fire disturbance may be an important contributor to contemporary vegetation composition and structure in old-growth forests of the southern Appalachian Mountains. However, due to a lack of information on pre-suppression fire regimes, vegetation pattern in the region has been primarily attributed to variability in soils and climate. To assess the pre-suppression fire regime’s ro...

Resilience and Regime Change in a Southern Rocky Mountain Ecosystem During the Past 17000 Years

Paleoecological records indicate that subalpine forests in western North America have been resilient in response to multiple influences, including severe droughts, insect outbreaks, and widely varying fire regimes, over many millennia. One hypothesis for explaining this ecosystem resilience centers on the disruption of forest dynamics by frequent disturbance and climatic variability, and the re...
